I was attracted to this YA novel because of the concept of words holding magical power. I think it is such a lovely metaphor and one that has an important message for young readers. Amy Neftzger writes a fast paced book with interesting characters and a great sense of hopefulness! Read on for my review of the book, an interview with the author AND a giveaway!!!

About the Book
Sometimes there’s no better way to understand reality than through fantasy, and the best way to find truth may be in a book – if you can find the right one.
Battles against darkness, a quest for truth, and a search for the book that no one can read are all part of the fantasy adventure in The War of Words. As an evil sorcerer wages war by using mysterious shadows and seeks to gain control by confusing the residents as to what’s real and what isn’t, the fate of the kingdom rests in the hands of Kelsey and Nicholas.
As the youngest officer in the king’s army, Kelsey fights the evil sorcerer s shadows on the battlefield as she explores the kingdom searching for the key to winning the war. Nicholas, a young sorcerer in training who is mastering his craft, discovers how the right words can change the course of the future.
Explore an enchanted maze, uncover the power of words, and learn about friendship in this whimsical tale.

The War of Words by Amy Neftzger
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This book follows protagonist Kelsey and her group of friends on their quest to find the secret weapon to ending the war against a powerful sorcerer that distorts reality using the power of words.
I found this book to be a really fun, fast paced read set in an intriguing fantasy world!
I liked the main character, Kelsey, almost immediately. She is not just an expert on the battle field, she is also an intelligent, brave and kind person who stands up for herself, her friends and what she believes in. Her band of friends all have similar qualities and provide a kaleidoscope of characters from a leopard skilled in healing arts, to an eccentric magician and an entertaining gargoyle!
The concept of words holding magical powers is so interesting. The sorcerer uses language against his enemies to make everyone understand reality differently. This is such a powerful metaphor for our world and for a young reader. The message is clear - words spoken with negative intention have immense power for evil.
Amy Neftzger writes in a clear and eloquent style. The world and the characters are expertly presented and the plot really moves. This is an all action kind of book!! Being the third book in a trilogy it was easy to read without having read the first two, however, I would recommend reading them in order as I found I wanted to know more about the characters back stories, which I am sure is detailed more in the first two books.
